Duke North 1103 Educational objective: formal presentation of a major topic in Geriatrics and Gerontology. It meets each Wednesdau of each month. The conference includes a monthly research conference and a monthly education seminar.
2. Geriatric Evaluation and Treatment Clinic Conference: Meets every Wednesday, 12-1PM. Coordinator: Dr. Heflin and Renee Weisner 620-4070.

4. Geriatrics Friday Morning Conference: Conference is held every Friday, . Coordinator: Second year fellows and Tom Simmons –286-6932.
Educational objective: Fellows and pharmacy residents present journal clubs, board reviews, or clinical case conferences in an interactive format with candid follow-up discussions among division members.
NOTE: Fellows are asked to present these conferences. The schedule is kept and maintained by second year fellows and distributed by Tom Simmons (286-6932). General formats include the following:
1. EBM or Journal club: Review of specific article or topic addressing an important clinic question. Fellows expected to utilize critical appraisal skills and facilitate discussion of application of evidence. Ideal to distribute article 2-4 days in advance via email or photocopy to allow attendees to read. May ask Mr. Simmons to copy.
2. Board Review: Fellow usually prepares questions from Geriatric Review Syllabus (GRS) available in fellows room. Possible formats include Geriatrics Jeopardy or simply round robin questioning of attendees. Need to copy and distribute questions at conference.
3. Clinical case conference: Review of clinical topic based on recent case. May choose to copy and distribute key resources.
5. Fellows’ Clinic Report: Meets every Friday Noon – 1:00 PM (Fellow on Clinics Rotation usually unable to attend.) Coordinators: Dr. Heflin and Dr. Twersky: hefli001@mc.duke.edu or 970-0127
GRECC conference room
Fellows and faculty meet every Friday over lunch to informally discuss important cases and clinical issues and review the evidence relevant to that topic.
*Once a month this conference is led by Dr. Heflin and is a discussion of fellowship issues. Dates for Munch with Mitch: 7/18, 8/15, 9/12, 10/10, 11/14, 12/12, 1/9, 2/13, 3/13, 4/10, 5/8, 6/12.

Aging Center Distinguished Lecture Series Meets one Thursday per month, September through June. Fellows attend luncheon with speaker afterward. Time and location TBA
National and international experts in geriatrics and gerontologic research present their work
1. Geriatrics Core Curriculum: Meets 8-9AM every Tuesday, July through September. GRECC conference room. Coordinator: Second year fellows.
Series of lectures given for the geriatrics and geriatric pharmacy fellows covering common topics in geriatrics and gerontology.
Intended to prepare fellows for management of commonly encountered issues and conditions.
2. Evidence-based Medicine in Geriatrics: Meets 8-9:30AM every Tuesday, September through November. GRECC conference room. Coordinator: Dr. Heflin: hefli001@mc.duke.edu or 970-0127
Series of interactive presentations on the practice of Evidence Based Medicine in geriatrics.
Presentations by division faculty on formulating questions, searching the literature, basic clinical epidemiology, and critical appraisal of a variety of article.
Special emphasis is placed on methodological challenges encountered in the care of older adults by interdisciplinary teams.
Fellows utilize skills promoted in the course during the Academic Geriatrics Rotation.
3. Clinical Teaching and Medical Decision Making Workshops: Location and time TBA. Usually meets on Monday evenings in the fall and spring. Coordinator: Dr. Greenblatt
Interactive sessions provide fellows with the opportunity to learn and master a variety of clinical teaching skills applicable to a variety of settings and key issues in bedside medical decision making.
Led by Dr. Larry Greenblatt, who has special training in clinical teaching.
4. Advance Course in Long Term Care: Meets 8-9:30AM every Tuesday, March through May. Location TBA. Coordinator: Dr. White and Emily Herbert – 660-7577.
Covers key topics in long term care, including medical directorship, team building, quality improvement, and nursing home litigation.
Utilizes interactive learning strategies and web-based readings and discussions.
5. Palliative Care Medicine Retreat Series: Meets for half or full day on Fridays 6 times per year. Location TBA. Coordinator: Dr. Elbert-Avila and Emily Herbert – 660-7577
Covers key topics in palliative, including pain management, non-pain symptom management, communication skills, psychosocial care, and understanding systems of care.
Utilizes interactive learning strategies and web-based readings and discussions.
Led by Dr. Elbert-Avila and taught by Duke faculty.
