Graduates:

 
Paul Mulhausen, MD, completed his fellowship in 1993. His research interest was staphylococcus aureus in nursing homes. Dr. Mulhausen is a physician in Geriatrics at the VA Medical Center/University of Iowa .
 
Collen Schmitt, MD, completed her fellowship in 1993. Her research interest was reflux in morbidly obese individuals. She is now in private practice
 
Eugene Lammers, MD, completed his fellowship in 1993. His research interest was clinical practices in nursing homes. He joined the staff at the Center for Geriatric Medicine, Methodist Hospital , Indianapolis , Indiana .
 
Jaya Rao, MD, completed her fellowship in 1994. Her research interests were arthritis and test ordering. After a brief stint of work with the CDC in Atlanta , Dr. Rao returned to HSR&D at the Indianapolis VAMC. She received a HSR&D Career Development Award from the Department of Veterans Affairs and returned to the VA in Durham . After completing her career award, she returned to the CDC to direct a new Center of Geriatric Research .
 
Kathy Stewart, MD completed her fellowship in 1995. Her research interest was in cancer and women’s health. She is in private practice.
 
Taylor Graves, MD, completed his fellowship in 1995. His research interest was adverse events after drug discontinuation. He joined the staff at Emory University .
 
David Edelman, MD, completed his fellowship in 1995. His research interest was in effectiveness of diagnostic testing. He joined the faculty at the VA Medical Center/DGIM, Duke Medical Center at the completion of his fellowship. He received a Research Career Development Award from the VA. He is now the Director of the Fellowship Program for HSR&D at the VA and DGIM at Duke.
 
Jason Dominitz, MD, completed his fellowship in 1996. His research interest is screening for colon cancer. He joined the faculty at the Seattle VA Medical Center and University of Washington and continues to work with the Seattle HSR&D Program.
 
Brian Uslick, MD, completed his fellowship in 1997. His research interest is disease surveillance. He is now in private practice.
 
Scott Letendre, MD, completed his fellowship in 1997. His research interest is in health services research methods. He joined the staff at the University of California at San Diego and completed a fellowship in neurologic HIV clinical research. After his fellowship, he joined the faculty at UC San Diego.
 
Mohamad Eloubeidi, MD, completed his fellowship in 1998. His research interest is screening for colon cancer. He is now on Faculty at University of Alabama at Birmingham .
 
Vance Fowler, MD, completed his fellowship in 1999 and was once of our most successful fellows. He has joined the faculty at Duke University in the Division of Infectious Disease. He received a highly competitive K-23 award from the NIH.
 
Preston Klassen, MD, completed his fellowship in 2000. His research interest was renal disease. He is now in private practice.
 
Stephen Wilson, MD, completed his fellowship in 2000. His research interest was infectious diseases. He is in private practice.
 
Mitch Heflin, MD completed his fellowship in 2002. He received his MHS from Duke University . He is now a faculty member in the Division of Geriatrics at Duke University .
 
Chris Woods, MD completed fellowship in 2002. He received his MPH from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill . He is now Chief of Infectious Disease at the VA Medical Center and on faculty at Duke University .
 
Jamy Ard, M.D., M.H.S., completed a fellowship in the Hypertension Center at Duke University before joining us. He then served as Assistant Chief Resident at the VA Medical Center in Durham . He completed the second year of his fellowship with our HSR&D M.D. Fellowship Program in 2003. Dr. Ard’s research interests were nutrition therapy for obesity, hypertension and diabetes mellitus, culturally appropriate lifestyle interventions on African Americans, and improving recruitment and retention of African Americans in cardiovascular risk reduction research. Dr. Ard received numerous grant funding during his fellowship. He is now on faculty in the Division of General Internal Medicine at the University of Alabama Birmingham .
 
Carla Brady, MD, MHS, completed her gellowship in 2006. She joined the Gastroenterolgy staff at Duke University Medical Center where she continues her research. She also received her MHS degree during her fellowship. Dr. Brady has been highly successful during her fellowship with several articles and presentations. She is also working on several research projects and continues to work closely with Dr. Dawn Provenzale, her fellowship mentor.
 
Lauren Brett Caram, MD – completed her fellowship in 2007. She joined the staff at the VA Medical Center in Durham . Her specialty is Geriatric Infectious Diseases and continues her research with Dr. Christopher Woods, Chief of Infectious Disease at the VA and a former fellow with our Center. She was awarded a very competitive and prestigious young investigator’s award from an International pool of applicants. The title of her new study is “Prospective Respiratory Epidemiologic Surveillance Study (PRESS) – Viral Respiratory Infections in a Long-Term Care Facility Population”. This study will use Veterans admitted to the ECRC at the Durham VAMC. This award is a joint research award from the IDSA Education and Research Foundation and the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases.
 
Brian Pien, MD, MPH – completed his fellowship in 2007. He received his MPH from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill . He worked closely with Dr. Christopher Woods in Infectious Disease. Dr. Pien was in an unusual position when he started his fellowship as he already had a partially academic/partially private laboratory and clinical position in Hawaii waiting for him when he completed his fellowship. This is where he returned to.
